Dr. Simmons was commissioned into the US Navy in 1984 and went on to earn her aviator and aerospace physiologist wings and completed a Ph.D. in Applied Human Biology. Over her distinguished career, she held many leadership roles including serving as a Commanding Officer twice, managed multi-million-dollar budgets, built and commissioned research centers, and successfully executed reorganizations of existing commands. During her time in leadership, she faced many challenges including base realignment and closure of a major research command and the transition of medical research functions to the Defense Health Agency. Despite her multifaceted roles, Dr. Simmons successfully executed a full research portfolio and received numerous research and professional achievement awards.
